What is ‘Somatic Yoga’?
‘Somatic’ Yoga is perhaps the latest buzz word, and for fabulous reasons as it plays a role in deeply resting + restoring our mind + body to facilitate healing. For many of us our body is screaming out for relief from stressors, niggles, injuries + conditions which are unfortunately becoming the normal way of our being. We just ‘get on with it’ and ignore them.
However, 'Somatic' is not NEW to me, nor any of my students of the last 21 years, nor any other trained Yogalates Teacher with The Yogalates Academy, because THIS IS our way of teaching. Masterfully created by Louise Solomon when she established the Yogalates Method in 1995. Firstly, the Yogalates Method is NOT a mixed Yoga & Pilates class. It is a unique methodology of intelligently sequencing guided breathwork into mindful movement, discovering the micro movements in the macro moves of an Asana practice. This becomes your somatic experience on the mat.
In short, Somatic Yoga is ….
Guided breathwork ~ taking mindful breaths to improve the fluidity of the diaphragm. Steadying the mind, the nervous system, the heart rate.
Guided movement ~ making smaller, slower movements in a mindful way. Often floor based moves where the brain is present as the muscle contracts, then releases.
Thereby allowing the body, mind and nervous stem to truly rest. Moving into complete body awareness and an internal experience.
This type of practice profoundly impacts our nervous system, in fact our entire being! Supporting our immune system, gut health, hormones, mindset ~ strengthens us physically, mentally & emotionally.
