3 Great reasons to limber before you…

do anything!  Ever wondered why I start my classes with a limber (if not I add to the description suggest to pre-limber), before a meditation......going for a run, at the gym, before anything?  Limber first, the motto I was blessed with in my Yogalates Teacher Training over 16 years ago, this wisdom has now made it's way into the new world of Yoga therapy and a few styles of Yoga.  Yet it was originally part of a Yogis traditional practice and still even in India they stand on the mat before Sun Salutations rolling each body part. If you are 80yrs old you are probably saying "this IS my exercise", over 60yrs old "well this is a given or nothing feels right", over 40yrs old "wish someone had told me this when I was 20yrs", 20yrs old ....please trust us it's worth it! My favourite way is to go from the bottom to the top, start rotating and rolling each and every joint because it;

  1. Realigns the joint and protects it when you load ~ if you have a repetitive one-directional movement task or activity, poor posture, an old injury the joint may be compressed on one side and loading at this angle may reduce strength and cause injury.  Also beneficial if any nerves or blood vessels are compressed in a mis-alignment.

  2. Hydrates and nourishes the cartilage, tendons, ligaments and the fascia ~ as you rotate the joint Synovial fluid in the cavity lubricates and provides the nutrients to keep the cartilage strong and healthy (ie anti-arthritis).  Also the tendons and ligaments are hydrated and supple, the sliding action of the fascia gives the muscle it's length and the joint more range of movement.

  3. Unblocks energy flow ~ old emotions, stuck energy trapped in joints is unsettling to the mind, making it difficult to meditate.  Moving the body gently helps to shift 'old stuff' in our energy body (Prana).
